One author's opinion on *whispers* fan-fiction...

Oookay. So, I like to avoid touchy subjects, since being an author means you have to swim in diplomacy and drink from the fount of it daily. But there is one topic that I'm feeling compelled to touch on.

Fan fiction.

This is after reading that some authors are horrified by the practice, and more power to them for having an opinion and sticking to it.

But, I have my own take on the matter, which is this: To my readers, go ahead and write fanfiction about Seers if you wish (as if I could stop you, anyway... *smirk*). I don't mind. Honestly, if you feel so compelled by the books that you have an urge to continue with it, I am so very okay with that. And the reason is pretty simple--I get your intention, and it's not to steal from me. It's an expression of love for something--and I should know. I've written fanfiction in the past, as have plenty of writing friends, and I've found it to be an awesome character exercise. And never, while writing it, did I rub my hands together with the intent to thieve a world. I just wanted to have fun exploring it further. So, write away, if the desire strikes you!

I mean, come on. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? (Which is hilarious, by the way.) Or Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters? They are fan fiction, period.

So, just wanted to share a feeling, folks, as per usual. Agree or disagree, I love you whole-heartedly anyway.

Toodles!
Jen

I love your take on this! It seems like authors would be pleased to know that their readers are inspired by their stories. Also, I think authors should be pleased just to see people writing! Who cares if it's fan fiction, they're writing!

Fanfiction rocks! I cannot imagine a bigger compliment to any author than to have people so taken with their characters and universe that they want more, more, more! And from a marketing perspective, it's brilliant. It keeps the love alive by bringing together a community of fans.

So let's see, a Seers fic...I am gonna have a lot of fun with Abram. ;)

Nicki!! *mwah* You know, you're So right on both counts. And also, who better to do Abram justice than you? I cannot think of it.

I have yet to read fan fiction. I guess that's kind of sad, huh?

Candace, not so sad, lol. It's not for everyone! I'm just happy when people are writing, period.

I loved your take on fanfic as well. It may seem crazy to you...maybe not... but my ultimate dream project is a Star Trek novel...I have the story pretty much written(some changes will be made obvivously for continuity sake). It's just a matter of waiting, lol.
